Why is my camera feed choppy or cutting out?
A feed that stutters, freezes, or cuts in and out is usually caused by a connection, hardware, or power issue that can be resolved immediately.
Choppy video or low frame rate
- Use a USB 3.0 (blue) port for the GameStrat Capture Device. USB 2.0 does not have enough bandwidth for video capture. If you are using a USB-C adapter, try bypassing it and connecting directly.
- Use a different port on your laptop
- Check the HDMI cable. For cable runs over 50 feet, use a higher-quality cable or an HDMI extender.
- Close unnecessary apps on the laptop. Video capture is CPU-intensive, and other apps competing for resources can cause frame drops.
Intermittent signal loss
- Loose HDMI connection — Reseat and secure all connections with tape or velcro straps.
- Failing HDMI adapter — Replace any Micro or Mini adapter that feels loose or does not seat firmly.
- Camera power — Use AC power instead of battery whenever possible. A low battery can trigger power-saving behavior that interrupts the HDMI output.
- Camera overheating — Ensure ventilation and avoid extended direct sun exposure on the camera body.
- GameStrat Capture Device USB port — Try a different USB 3.0 port on the laptop.
- Replace all HDMI cords, USB 3.0 cords and adapters 1 at 1 time to determine which cord is faulty.
